UK Holocaust Memorial Day

27th January 2024Mrs S Field

Holocaust Remembrance / Memorial Day, is an international memorial day on 27 January that commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of 6 million Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities by Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945. 27 January was chosen to commemorate the date that Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated by the Red Army in 1945.

It is also a time for remembering other genocides around the world such as; Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Visit the school library to see the display that our Pupil Librarians have set up; full of information, sources of reference and books to read.

2024 HMD theme: Fragility of Freedom

https://www.hmd.org.uk/what-is-holocaust-memorial-day/

The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and genocide must still be resisted every day. Our world often feels fragile and vulnerable and we cannot be complacent. Even in the UK, prejudice and the language of hatred must be challenged by us all.

HMD is for everyone. Each year across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future.

Together we bear witness for those who endured genocide, and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.

#StudentSpotlight: Harry Wilson – Year 8

19th January 2024Mrs S Field
Introducing Harry Wilson of Year 8 who attended a Premier Football Day at the Tottenham Hotspur training ground in December 2023.
He, once again like he did when he attended in 2019,  won player of the day, overall.
The day was attended by 90 other children, but impressing the coaches so much, Harry took the top spot for:
  • the most technical player
  • the most goals and assists of the day
  • overall best ability in the sport of football
That’s quite an achievement, Harry!
Harry is an overall sporty child that attends Basketball Club, the EGS Football Team (lucky us!) and Cuffley Football Club.
His dream is to work in the sports industry, and, he seems to be on the right path for this.
His mum wrote to us to let us know about Harry’s achievement and said “Thank you to Enfield Grammar, again, for helping Harry work towards an amazing future in sports.”
We are very proud of him and we will continue to support him throughout his educational and sporting journey. Well Done Harry!

If your son has something to be proud of (in or out of school) let us know! We would love to #Spotlight him!

Martin Luther King Day

15th January 2024Mrs S Field

On Monday, Mrs Rudolph along with her work experience students from Kingsmead school and our pupil librarians created a display in the library where you can learn more about Martin Luther King MLK and his passionate fight for civil rights..

Although MLK Day is not a celebrated day here in the UK, it is important to remember those who have come before us, who stood up for what they believed in and were striving for a more harmonious world.

Martin Luther King Day, 15 January (his birthday) is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on the third Monday of January each year. It is a day to honour the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to the civil rights movement.

Martin Luther King: born 1929, assassinated in 1968.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.”

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

EGS says ‘NO’ to all forms of discrimination!

11th January 2024Mrs S Field

Here are some new posters that are displayed in all classrooms and around the school.

Following on from valuable anti-discriminatory training for all staff, a zero tolerance approach is being reinforced, with fully accessible reporting systems for both staff and students.

Our goal is not solely to reprimand but to educate and transform behaviours, cultivating a more inclusive school community. All students will be comprehensively educated about anti-discrimination and the various sanctions in place. Full details were sent out to all parents earlier this week.

Our school must be a place where every pupil feels secure, valued, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

There has been some fantastic work happening across the Art Department over the past year. Here are a few highlights:

🦸 Year 7 designed superhero self-portraits and created stunning landscapes inspired by illustrator, painter and photographer Ashes57.

🖼️ Year 8 explored Cubism, taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris. They also created personalised clay totem poles reflecting their identity through animals, heritage, hobbies, sport, music and EGS colours, before producing vibrant mixed-media cubist artwork using recycled tin cans, coloured pens, pencils and watercolours.

🌍 Year 9 created expressive self-portraits inspired by Caribbean multidisciplinary artist Yermine Richardson, celebrating the vibrancy of Caribbean and African cultures. They also investigated Op Art, producing eye-catching work influenced by pioneering artist Bridget Riley.

Also, a huge thank you to our talented Art students who supported our Year 4 & 5 Open Afternoon, where visitors enjoyed creating raised salt paintings using glue, salt and watercolours.

We`re so proud of the imagination, creativity and skill our students have shown this term. Well done to everyone involved! 👏🎨✨

To celebrate the end of their time at Enfield Grammar School, our Year 13 students enjoyed a fantastic weekend in Paris. 🇫🇷

Highlights included a boat tour along the River Seine, shopping at Westfield Les 4 Temps, exploring the vibrant 10th arrondissement, and a fun-filled day at Disneyland Paris.

The trip was a great way to celebrate the end of their school journey and create lasting memories with friends.

A huge thank you to Ms Johnson and Mr Armstrong for giving up their weekend to make this memorable experience possible.

We wish our Year 13 students every success for the future as they embark on their next chapter. We look forward to welcoming them back on Results Day and celebrating their achievements. Good luck, Class of 2026! 🎓
