World of Wonders ‘A Week of School Trips’ – WOW!

5th July 2024Mrs S Field

It’s been a week of logistical planning and operations!

On Wednesday 26 June, over 500 students all out on trips into London, using public transport on the same day….which turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year.

Mr Thompson led 180 Year 9 students to the British Museum

Traveling on the train from Enfield Chase and then on the Underground to Holborn then walking to the British Museum on a beautiful day.

The pupils then embarked on a tour around the British Museum looking back at history over many hundreds of years old, this included Ancient Greece and Rome, Ancient Egypt and history in Asia.

The boys were fantastic throughout the trip and were a credit to the school dealing with the travel into central London and with the hot conditions.

Mr Walker-Trew led our Year 7 Cohort to London Zoo

“The students had the opportunity to see a wonderful array of animals including some very rare and endangered Indian lion cubs with only around 600 left world wide.
They  were able to explore the conservation projects of the zoo and the re-population of animals, such as these rare lions, back into the wild as well as the food chains and habitats the different animals survive in, in the wild.
Despite the boys going to the zoo on a very hot day, all the animals were on show leading to a great day for all the students and staff.
The zoo also sent an email saying “They hope to see us back next year as we had such a great day”!
Mrs Miller added;
“Arrived at London zoo to be cheerfully greeted by a lady who’d worked at the zoo for 20 years and commented on how well behaved EGS students had always been!
Managed to cover pretty much the whole site – Penguin Beach, Butterfly Paradise, Land of the Lions, Tiny Giants (including the bird-eating spiders), Giants of the Galapagos, The Secret Life of Reptiles and Amphibians, The Farmyard, Tiger Territory, Komodo Dragon House, Gorilla Kingdom, The Outback, Into Africa, In with the Lemurs and Monkey Valley.
Big shout out to Mr Leverno who bought everyone ice-cream!”

Ms Paraskeva and Dr Frimpong led our Year 8s to visit the Royal Observatory Museum in Greenwich

“Our Year 8 trip was an enriching and enjoyable experience for all involved. The trip provided a perfect blend of educational value and interactive fun, engaging students with the history of astronomy and the significance of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Students were thrilled to stand on the Prime Meridian, straddling the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.  They learnt the significance of the Prime Meridian and how it became the basis for GMT, which fascinated some of the students.  They also enjoyed learning how the ‘old’ telephones worked!

The view of London from the Royal Observatory was breath-taking and we all enjoyed the beauty of Greenwich Park.

Some students were also able to visit the nearby National Maritime Museum, extending their learning about maritime history and navigation.

Altogether a very enjoyable day out!”

This WOW day was an amazing team effort involving nearly all the staff in the school in some way. Thank you to everyone involved for helping to give our students a day of enrichment activities.

4th July 2024Mrs S Field

It is with regret that our annual Sports Day scheduled for tomorrow has had to be postponed due to the weather forecast. We will endeavour to organise something before the end of term to replace it.

JULY #BookoftheMonth: Stolen Histories

3rd July 2024Mrs S Field
#bookofthemonth for July is:
Stolen Histories (the truth about the British Empire and how is shaped us) by Sathnam Sanghera, which fits nicely with July being South Asian Heritage month (although at EGS we are celebrating the whole of Asia).

Why not join us in reading our monthly book? Let the library know what you think of the books

Year 7 Band On The Road!

3rd July 2024Mrs S Field

Over the last 2 weeks, the Year 7 Band have travelled to St Andrew’s Primary School and Raglan Primary School to perform in assemblies.

They got to show off their talent through performing 3 of their hits they have been learning over the past year, and to inspire the Primary students to pick up an instrument!

We hope to motivate lots of them to choose EGS as their secondary school and for them to become key members of our music department, much like our awesome Year 7 Band!

Year 5 EGS Activity Day

2nd July 2024Mrs S Field

On Friday 28 June, we invited Year 5 students from 5 different local Primary Schools to join us for a Music and Sport Activity Day. It gave Year 5 students who are now considering which secondary school they would like to attend, an opportunity to see the school in action and take part in some brilliant music and sporting activities.

The day was a great success! We saw lots of budding potential and hope to see lots of their faces again in September 2026.

>>> Y7 Race to the Line at the National Rocket Car Championships!

27th June 2024Mrs S Field

Following on from our post (below) back in May, Dr Frimpong, along with Ms Miller, took a group of Year 7 students to Brighton with their rocket cars to compete in the National Rocket Car Championships at Hove Park School!!

EGS were in third place after the first race but unfortunately failed to secure a placing after it was decided to carry out a second race and an average taken, however, they still came 4th overall which is a fabulous result.

Congratulations to them 🙂

A fun day was had by all and thank you to Hove Park School for hosting.

Race to the Line Competition

Year 7 engaged in a design competition as part of science week. The Learning Partnership runs the competition each year to inspire young engineers across the country. The brief was to design a rocket car with the materials provided. The key principle was that the car be aerodynamic, which they would achieve by applying their knowledge from science lessons on Newton’s Second Law.

Working in groups, the students assembled and modified the cars. Starting from a foam block, they used a variety of tools construct, shape and add some artistic flare to their designs.

The set up: the launching device was stuck to the ground with a wire going through it. The wire would go through hooks on the bottom of the car (for safety purposes – ensures the car does not jet off in a random direction).

The distance was the same for every launch (8 meters).

When the launcher was activated, a nail would pierce a CO2 cannister in the back of the cars. The gas would then propel the car to the end.

We recorded every launch and extracted the time taken from launch to collision.

Group 4 (Adwaith, Fola, and Kaiden) achieved the best time of 0.40 seconds (an excellent speed of 20 meters per second!)

Thank you to Science Department (teachers and technicians) for delivering the programme and facilitating the launches!

Overall, the students had a fantastic time from start to finish. The screams of excitement and eager eyes during the launches were proof of a job well done!

See you there!

As you know, the quiz evening is fast approaching and we would like to make the best out of this event for our school, we would like to ask if you or your business/employer are able to help in any of these ways? …. These are great responsible business initiatives!:

 *1. RAFFLE DONATIONS*

Depending on the nature of the business, your company/employer may be willing to donate goods or services we could use as raffle prizes, which would effectively be good advertising for them. Examples could include vouchers for free treatment (manicure, facial, etc), meal for two, discount off products or services (e.g. free first consultation meeting, free assessment and estimate, etc), cash donations or products themselves. We will promote/share your kind donations our social media pages.

Please do reach out to your employer/consider whether your company could contribute and, if so, contact us ([email protected]).

 *2. MATCH FUNDING*

Match funding involves an employer/company matching the money raised by employees for the benefit of a charity. The exact terms of how this works and any caps that apply to the money matched would be set out in each company’s own policy.

Please ask your employer whether they offer match funding. You can do this by sending your employer’s HR team an email (below is a template/draft email you can adapt to use for this):

Template/draft to send your employer asking about match funding:

Dear [NAME]

I am writing to ask whether [NAME OF EMPLOYER] offer “match funding” support to staff involved in charitable activities?

The parents’ association of my [child’s/children’s] school (Friends of Enfield Grammar School is a registered charity, number 269212) organises activities to raise much needed funds for the school and I am hoping to be involved in the next event.

I know that some employers engage in match funding (matching the money raised by a member of staff, which then goes to the charity) and wanted to ask if this is something the firm/company] does?

Kind regards

Please Note: You are welcome to bring your own snacks, but NO drinks are permitted, other than drinks purchased from the FEGS Bar. Please be reminded that the school has a ‘no nuts on the premises’ policy. This event has a ‘no refunds’ policy.
