End of Term: Summer Break begins…!

27th July 2023Mrs S Field

There were so many activities going on during the run up to the end of term; department trips, tours, music concerts and activity days, finishing with our annual staff BBQ, where staff get the chance to relax and socialise, are thanked for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and,  also to say goodbye to colleagues who are moving on.

We would like to wish all our students (including our prospective ones!), their families, our staff, LYDS Community Patrol, supporters and local community, a happy and healthy summer break.

So, until the results days in August…. ‘goodbye and stay safe’.

Here is a video snippet of some events that we didn’t get around to posting about just before the end of term….

https://cdn.realsmart.co.uk/ac0a4ac2fc14b45086e9c5af7511da39/uploads/2023/07/27125618/End-of-term-summary-of-events-2023-1.mp4
  • Year 7 Activity Day
  • Year 8 Activity Day
  • Year 8 & 9 Maths & Computer Science Trip to Legoland
  • Year 10 Trip to Thorpe Park – 58 year 10 pupils were rewarded for their excellent behaviour and work throughout the year with a trip to Thorpe Park. The day went superbly and all the boys and teachers enjoyed themselves and the glorious sunny weather.
  • Year 7 Choir perform for local residents – Our fabulous choir, EGS Voices, joined local choir “Adorned” at Ponders End Methodist Church for a performance for local residents. Our fabulous singing teacher Paula Thompson led the choir and they all sang brilliantly! We had lots of comments from the audience about how fantastic they were and looked forward to the next performance.
  • Year 7 perform at St Andrews – The Year 7 boys put on a fantastic show for the year 5 and 6 students at St.Andrews Primary School. They performed a couple of songs and then showed off the various instruments and answered questions about life in year 7. Mr Kendrick then spoke about the Sports scholarship and how students can apply and excel at Enfield Grammar. All of the young students were fully engaged, asking questions and thoroughly enjoying the boys performance

#StudentSpotlight: Ethan Bousoula – Jack Petchey ‘Speak-Out’ Winner

28th April 2023Mrs S Field
Regional Champion: Ethan Bousoula – Congratulations!
In February, the Enfield Regional Final 2022-23 of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge was hosted.
634 students had previously attended the Jack Petchey workshops and from them, Ethan was selected to go forward into the final.
The regional final evening was packed with original and insightful ideas from many young speakers, but it was our very own Ethan who stood out and won the judges over with his speech called “It Doesn’t Get Better (YOU get better)”.
Ethan’s speech was an emotional account of his experience of being gay and coming out at EGS. His speech was honest, vulnerable and incredibly powerful and I am very confident that out of the 37 Regional Finalists, he will be chosen as one of the 15 to perform at The Cambridge Theatre on the West End and go for gold!
If you see Ethan, please do congratulate him – he deserves it.
Ms Ireland says “It was a win for him, EGS, our community and the LGBTQ+ community. One very proud teacher right here!”

courage – determination – talent

Happy Ramadan To our Muslim Community

22nd March 2023Mrs S Field

Ramadan is a very important time in the Islamic calendar, and Muslims all over the world will take part. This year Ramadan starts this evening (22nd March) and lasts until the evening of 21 April.

Our library has a display area (in the photo) featuring interesting information about Ramadan where the students can come to find out and understand more about this religious time in the Muslim calendar.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast – they won’t eat or drink between dawn and sunset.  Fasting is important during Ramadan as it allows Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and come closer to Allah, or God. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which form the basis of how Muslims live their lives. The other pillars are faith, prayer, charity and making the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

Ramadan is also a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends. Normally, people will make a special effort to connect with their communities and reach out to people who need help.

It is common to have a meal (known as the suhoor) just before dawn and another (known as the iftar) directly after sunset. At the end of the fast – when the sun has gone down – usually, families and friends will get together for iftar to break their fast. (although during covid restrictions celebrations will have to be via zoom / within bubbles)

Many Muslims also usually go to the mosque to pray, when lockdown restrictions aren’t in place. Some mosques have been holding virtual services online for people to watch together.

Ramadan falls during this month because this is when the holy book that’s followed by Muslims, called the Qur’an, was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, but the date changes each year. This is because Islam uses the lunar calendar (based on the cycles of the Moon), so it isn’t a fixed date in the Western/solar calendar.

There is a special festival to mark the end of Ramadan when they will feast and celebrate! This is called Eid al-Fitr – the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. It begins when the first sight of the new moon is seen in the sky. Muslims will not only celebrate the end of fasting, but will also thank Allah for the help and strength that they were given throughout the previous month.

We are committed to the Enfield Inclusion Charter

15th March 2023Mrs S Field

Inclusion is a universal human right. The aim of inclusion is to embrace all people irrespective of disability, race, gender, medical or other need.

Signing the Inclusion Charter is a commitment to:

  • Provide clear, visible and strong leadership for inclusion
  • Ensure that everyone takes responsibility for including children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities
  • Understand that all behaviour happens for a reason
  • Listen and respond to children and young people’s opinions and ideas when making any decision which impacts on their lives
  • Celebrate difference and diversity
  • Work with families, professionals and practitioners across our community to help all children and young people to thrive
  • Ensure that everyone is comfortable to be open and honest about what support they need to help children and young people in their care
  • Support children and young people to prepare for their adulthood from the early years and throughout their childhood and adolescence, so they can shape their future in the way they want.

This charter sets out a shared vision for inclusion and gives 8 principles by which schools, education settings and related services can achieve inclusive education for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The Charter has been developed by children and young people, headteachers, teachers, parents and carers, council officers, health partners and voluntary sector organisations through a series of workshops, focus groups and discussions of best practice.

At the heart of this charter, is a culture where we embrace difference; where barriers are minimised or removed; and where the everyday lived experience, interests and needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are better understood.

Schools and settings who sign up to this Charter commit to both the principles and approach, ensuring more appropriate educational choice for pupils and enabling an environment that promotes peer support and embraces individual differences. This means more of our young people can be educated locally so they can contribute to, and be supported by, their local community.

There has been some fantastic work happening across the Art Department over the past year. Here are a few highlights:

🦸 Year 7 designed superhero self-portraits and created stunning landscapes inspired by illustrator, painter and photographer Ashes57.

🖼️ Year 8 explored Cubism, taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris. They also created personalised clay totem poles reflecting their identity through animals, heritage, hobbies, sport, music and EGS colours, before producing vibrant mixed-media cubist artwork using recycled tin cans, coloured pens, pencils and watercolours.

🌍 Year 9 created expressive self-portraits inspired by Caribbean multidisciplinary artist Yermine Richardson, celebrating the vibrancy of Caribbean and African cultures. They also investigated Op Art, producing eye-catching work influenced by pioneering artist Bridget Riley.

Also, a huge thank you to our talented Art students who supported our Year 4 & 5 Open Afternoon, where visitors enjoyed creating raised salt paintings using glue, salt and watercolours.

We`re so proud of the imagination, creativity and skill our students have shown this term. Well done to everyone involved! 👏🎨✨

To celebrate the end of their time at Enfield Grammar School, our Year 13 students enjoyed a fantastic weekend in Paris. 🇫🇷

Highlights included a boat tour along the River Seine, shopping at Westfield Les 4 Temps, exploring the vibrant 10th arrondissement, and a fun-filled day at Disneyland Paris.

The trip was a great way to celebrate the end of their school journey and create lasting memories with friends.

A huge thank you to Ms Johnson and Mr Armstrong for giving up their weekend to make this memorable experience possible.

We wish our Year 13 students every success for the future as they embark on their next chapter. We look forward to welcoming them back on Results Day and celebrating their achievements. Good luck, Class of 2026! 🎓

Our wonderful PTA `FEGS` will be holding a second-hand uniform sale at the upper school next week. If you`d like to pick up some school uniform at a fraction of the cost, then make sure you come along......
