W/C 7th November:
Book of the Week: The Recruit by Robert Muchamore
The first book in the Cherub Series.
Most suited for year 9 and up, this story is action packed.
Cherub agents are aged between ten and seventeen. They live in the real world, slipping under adult radar and getting information that sends criminals and terrorists to jail.
For official purposes, these children do not exist.
Constantly at the top of the most borrowed books in the school, I can say that this is THE most popular book series for our boys.
Role Model of the Week: Dynamo
Stage Name: Dynamo Profession: Magician Birth Name: Steven Frayne
Born: 17th December 1982 Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK, to a British mother and a father of Pakistani ancestry. Height: 5ft 6”
Dynamo (Steven Frayne) was bullied at school because he came from a really poor housing estate and wasn’t very tall. He also has Crohn’s disease. His father was in prison for most of the time that he was growing up, so his grandfather taught him magic tricks as a means for self defense.
As he grew older, he took to the streets, talked his way into events and concerts, so that he could perform magic. Sometimes he would video the amazed reactions he received from people.
Since then, we have seen him on TV trapping peoples phones in glass bottles and walking on water! He has been inducted to the secretive inner folds of the Magic Circle and has raised money for charity.
W/C 14th November:
Book of the Week: The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
A BOLT OF LIGHTNING ON MY KICKS……….
THE COURT IS SIZZLING. MY SWEAT IS DRIZZLING.
STOP ALL THAT QUIVERING. CUZ TONIGHT I’M DELIVERING.
Josh and his twin Jordan have basketball in their blood. They’re kings of the court, star players for their school. But when Jordan meets a girl, the twins’ tight-knit bond is tested – are the rules of the game about to be broken?
Role Model of the Week: Joe Wicks
Name: Joseph Trevor Wicks MBE AKA: The Body Coach
Born: 21st September 1985, Epsom, Surrey. His father worked as a roofer and his mother was a social worker. Joe grew up alongside his two brothers, Nick and George, on a council estate. Height: 5ft 8”
Most people first heard of Joe Wicks when he became a massive hit on YouTube with his ‘P.E. with Joe’ workouts. His aim was to support children at home during the covid pandemic with their fitness – but he has done even more since then. How did he become so famous and successful? Here is a brief look at how he did it.
School: Blenheim High School followed by NESCOT technology college and then moving on to study sports science at St Mary’s University in Twickenham. This degree set the foundation for what would become a successful career in fitness.
Work: Joe first started as a teaching assistant in a school, but then left to set up his own business as a personal trainer and nutritional coach. He spent time advertising and giving out flyers to people about his classes. Then he began to put videos on YouTube and pictures on Instagram of both his fitness classes and healthy recipes. ‘P.E. with Joe’ on YouTube was an humongous hit during the covid pandemic and all his hard work began to pay off. Soon he was being offered book deals, TV shows and money for numerous product endorsements.
He was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to fitness and charity in the United Kingdom and abroad – and particularly for his aspirational support during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Role Model of the Week: Malala Yousafzai
Born: 12 July 1997, Mingora, Pakistan
The Nobel Peace Prize 2014 Residence at the time of the award: United Kingdom
Prize motivation: “for her struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education”
Malala Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for the right of every child to receive an education.
She was born in the Swat Valley in Pakistan. When the Islamic Taliban movement took control of the valley in 2008, girls’ schools were burned down, and they banned girls from going to school. Malala spoke out publicly against the Taliban’s regime and in 2009 it was agreed that girls could go to school, as long as they wore Burkas.
It was not long before the Taliban threatened Malala’s life. In 2012, Malala was shot. She survived, but had to flee to England and live in exile.
Malala graduated at Oxford University in 2020 and has continued with her charity, the Malala fund, to support girls education around the world and her work with refugees.
Tickets can be purchased via ParentPay.

In support of Movember this month and International Men’s Day on Saturday (19th), Lower School are holding a ‘wear a moustache’ to school tomorrow, Friday 18th November.
Boys can come into school wearing a false moustache or buy one for charity from the LS office for 20p.
All other donations towards Movember can be put in the collection box and will be sent to the charity.
Movember
Men’s health is in crisis. Men are dying on average 4.5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.
A growing number of men – around 10.8M globally – are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. And across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 69% of all suicides.
Movember is uniquely placed to address this crisis on a global scale. We fund ground-breaking projects all over the world, engaging men where they are to understand what works best and accelerate change.
https://uk.movember.com/about/cause
Men’s Day raises awareness for:
– The high male suicide rate across the world
– The educational challenges that face both men and boys at all stages of life
– Men’s health, their shorter life expectancy and the fact that they suffer from workplace deaths at a much higher rate than women
– Male violence, and the fact that males are also victims to things such as rape, sexual exploitation and domestic violence
– The challenges faced by men as parents, especially as single parents or parents that do not have a good relationship with the Mother of their children. There is also focus on Fathers rights
– Male survivors of violence or abuse, including domestic abuse
– The negative portrayal of men in the media and beyond. This includes male stereotypes that are used by well-known brands in advertising campaigns
