Chemistry Roadshow….’As If By Magic!’ 💥💨🧯🧬🧪⚠️

21st March 2024Mrs S Field

During British Science week March 2024, we were fortunate enough to have Dr. Szydlo perform his extravagant Chemistry Roadshow to all of our year 9s and 10s!

This roadshow was a series of fully risk-assessed exciting KS4 science demonstrations which is linked to the GCSE Science specification and wowed the students with a lot of visual effects.

These sessions were a great way to boost excitement around science for pupils and staff alike, as well as review their knowledge on KS4 GCSE science practicals.

Dr Szydlo has a rich history of delivering exciting and insightful roadshows for both Primary and Secondary school students. Dr Szydlo has been teaching Science for over 40 years, and routinely delivers sold-out lectures at the Royal Institution and TED talks. He has delivered his roadshows at prestigious universities, including Cambridge and Imperial College.

This unique lecture is seen by thousands of children every year and our year 9 and 10 pupils were fortunate enough to gain insight!!

Y12 Politics Trip to Westminster

20th March 2024Mrs S Field

A-Level conference 11 March 2024

Mr Manel took a group of our students on this very informative, interesting and enjoyable trip to the Houses of Parliament:

On Monday 11th March I accompanied seven Year 12 Politics students on a visit to the heartbeat of our parliamentary democracy; Westminster SW1.

Our destination was the magnificent Westminster Central Hall to join over two thousand other A-Level Politics students from around the country for speeches and Q&A sessions with contemporary prominent political figures.

When I visited the same venue as an A-Level Politics student myself, we listened to the likes of Norman Tebbit, Dennis Healey and Tony Benn. Forty years on and it was shadow health secretary Wes Streeting, backbench Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, leader of Reform UK Richard Tice plus political podcasters Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart.

The reception for the guests ranged from polite applause to some booing! I will leave it to you to guess who got what!

The consensus of our students was that the conference greatly helped to increase their knowledge of a number of the topics they study.

We also witnessed guests arriving for a Commonwealth service at Westminster Abbey and an anti-monarchy demonstration.

A very enjoyable day out!

Another great week of football! Results & Upcoming Fixtures & Match Report👇 A Cup Win for EGS Y10 🏆👏👏👏

18th March 2024Mrs S Field

EGS had an amazing week in football last week – Congratulations to ALL the football teams!

Middlesex Cup Final Year 10 – Match Report

The Year 10s returned to Rectory Park where they successfully captured the Middlesex cup 2 years ago, but could they repeat the feat with a couple of key absentees?

EGS had a slight upper hand in the first exchanges, moving the ball around the pitch nicely. Twyford defended well and kept us at arms length for long periods of time and had their own chances early on.

Twyford looked organised and solid in defence. It took some creativity and quick passes in midfield and a late run into the box from Bruno Hoyck who found himself unmarked and he coolly slotted the ball into the corner to make it 1-0.

It continued to be a close game and Twyford grew in confidence as the half went on. Their talented front 2 were giving the EGS back four a few problems.

A scrappy passage of play led to the Twyford striker dribbling down the right wing at pace before being fouled in the area for a penalty. The same player stepped up and placed it in the corner to make it 1-1.

The second half saw Twyford start strongly and they came out flying with an early penalty appeal waved away by the referee.

EGS were not so lucky the second time as the Twyford striker made another dynamic run, this time down the left wing to get fouled in the area. Penalty to Twyford. With Twyford well on top at this stage it could have spelt disaster for EGS…but, Antonio Alexander in goal had other ideas!

Antonio won the battle this time and guessed the right way to make a spectacular penalty save. But he wasn’t done there. He quickly kicked it out to the wing and EGS were instantly on the attack.

Lucas Mckie eventually picked up the ball on the left wing, beating 2 defenders, cutting inside and calmly stroking the ball past the keeper to make it 2-1 to EGS.

From there, Charlie Mcloughlin started to dictate the game and Elvis Elendu and Sam Wray were solid as a rock in defence not giving Twyford a chance.

A true team performance in the second half saw EGS see out the game in full control and bring home the Middlesex cup for the second time!

Well done EGS!

What A Result! EGSY11 Football Team WIN U16s Middx Cup 🏆👏👏👏 Match Report..👇

13th March 2024Mrs S Field
The Year 11 football team did Enfield Grammar School proud by winning the Moncaster Under 16 Middlesex Cup with a 1-0 victory over Uxbridge School on Monday.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! 🏆👏👏👏
It was a tight game that was clinched by a 65th minute goal by Ruzgar Suyer after a determined run into the box, followed by a smart finish under the keeper at the near post. Ruzgar unfortunately had his ankle broken later in the game by a nasty tackle and we wish him a speedy recovery.
EGS outplayed their opponents for the majority of the game with Goalkeeper Luca Sorrentino relatively untroubled.
Player of the Match, Joseph Boyaram, was a persistent threat down the wings and nearly pulled of a worldie of a bicycle kick in the first half.
Jay Lambert and Harry Doran kept things tight at the back and snuffed out any threat that Uxbridge posed, whilst also building and directing play from the centre of defence.
Danny Pearce brought his usual tenacity at right wing, before moving to right back after Efo Genc took a knock early on.
Ben Jacob-Celement showed his defensive aptitude and adaptability in moving from the left to the right side of defence and still managed to get forwards well whilst keeping the opponents left winger quiet.
Lloyd Asamoah probed and tested the opposition throughout, popping up in spaces across the midfield and showcasing his agility and dribbling skills as he combined with Joseph to torment the Uxbridge defence.
Gary Gibbs and Daniel Stefanov were rock solid in the middle of the park and kept the ball moving nicely. Daniel used his frame well to break up attacks whilst Gary displayed his power and passing range in turning defence into attack.
Billy Wells lead the line well in the lone striker well and drove the team up the field with his pressing and link-up play.
They were well supported by Mohamed Ould-Ali and Emmanuel Frimpong who appeared as subs.
Emmanuel worked his socks of showing his pace and stamina on the right, belying his penchant for a lunchtime Chinese meal.
Mohamed deserved more game time, but some tactical disarray and poor time keeping by the management team plus the tightness of the game limited his minutes on the pitch.
A final shout to unused subs Teddy Sheppard and Kieran Jacob-Clements who both played a roll in previous games and were on hand ready to play their part if needed.
Likewise the injured Aaron Whitely and Santana Hall-Reid who were also unavailable.
Remember, it’s a team game and everyone plays their part.
A final well done to all the boys involved through the years and there cannot be a better way to end their 5 year journey as a school team…hope to see you in the First XI next year!

Y12 Computer Science Trip to UCL

7th March 2024Mrs S Field
Having been invited to visit by Professor Mohamedally, Mr Applewhaite took our Year 12 A-Level students in Computer Science for a trip to UCL this week.
They had great time interacting with Year 2 students in Computer Science and testing their advanced programs in AI, Computer Vision and a bit of Data Science. We were delighted to meet Paul Carter there, one of the presenters from BBC Click.
They were introduced to touchless computing using Motion Input which allows those who aren’t able to hold a mouse or use a keyboard to still access technology and play games using hand gestures, facial expressions and even using eye movements.
It was an eye opening experience for all the students!
