Staff Spotlight: Ms J McCall – Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum & Learning)

Enfield Grammar School would like to introduce:
Jenny McCall – our new Deputy Headteacher – Curriculum & Learning.
 
Jenny McCall is delighted to have joined our community as the new Deputy Head for Curriculum. She has worked in comprehensive boys’ education for 20 years and has previously led on curriculum, digital strategy, learning and teaching and professional development.
 
Hailing originally from the Isle of Wight, Ms. McCall grew up in Birmingham and after obtaining a degree in English from Leeds University, made the move to London to train to teach at the Institute of Education. She enjoys reading, quizzes, art exhibitions and cryptic crosswords. Her husband is also a Senior Leader in a Secondary School and they have two young children aged 4 and 6.
 
Ms McCall is very proud to be joining such a wonderfully diverse community with an incredible history and is excited to contribute to Enfield Grammar’s bright future.
 
And we are lucky to have her onboard!

Y11 DofE Silver Practice Expedition… Done!

The weekend saw a group of our Year 11 pupils undertaking their DofE Silver Award Practice Expedition.
Setting off from school on Friday and heading to the beautiful Surrey Hills, the boys and staff checked into a local YHA hostel where they went over routes, navigation, nutrition, cooking and safety.
Successfully completing a 12-mile route on Saturday gave them the opportunity to put into practice their navigation skills, to experience varying terrain and to appreciate their surroundings. A further 10 mile hike on Sunday finished off the weekend.
The entire group showed great teamwork and progress on the skills necessary to complete their upcoming qualifying expedition in October.
 
Mr Wragg and Mr Smith were extremely proud of the boy’s achievements and how well the boys conducted themselves over the course of the weekend…. “The boys were an absolute credit to the school and the whole experience was an absolute pleasure to supervise”.

Rosh Hashanah! Happy Jewish New Year!

Rosh Hashanah begins the evening of the 25th and continues to the evening of 27th.

Rosh Hashanah, literally meaning “head of the year”, is the Jewish New Year. It is a time of inner renewal and divine atonement.

It is customary to have big feasts on both nights of Rosh Hashanah and there are lots of customary dishes, including: honey cake, brisket, tzimmes and more Rosh Hashanah recipes

One of the common practices of Rosh Hashanah is attending the High Holy Day services, where the shofar can be heard.

Many people go to a Tashlich service where they throw bread crumbs into a naturally running body of water as a means of casting away their sins. On the second night of Rosh Hashanah it is customary to eat a new fruit, a symbol of newness.

 

Y11 Silver DofE Practice Expedition Weekend…

Looking forward to seeing the Year 11 boys tomorrow and hearing about their DofE Silver Practice Expedition!
A group of our boys who went through the DofE Bronze programme last year in Year 10 have signed up to continue on into the Silver award. This time we’re starting with the Expedition section so, on Friday, they went off  to the Surrey Hills area for their practice session.
