Let’s Celebrate Reading Together – Summer 2021

1st August 2021Mrs S Field

Staff used the final session of Drive to Fly (part of our CPD staff  programme) to reflect on the reading focus for this year and various reading strategies that have been discussed.

Each department was taught two lessons from other subjects which were created for
KS3/4 to bring fiction reading into all subjects. We tried to ensure that each
department had subjects that were quite different to their own in order to
bring variety to the sessions.

English saw two incredible reading lessons from Science and Geography, Humanities were immersed in MFL and P.E., Science partook in some Citizenship and D.T. etc. Teachers were engaged and thoroughly enjoyed the sessions – learning about other subjects as well as gaining new techniques around reading that they could bring into their future lessons.

Feedback was shared at the end of each mini lesson, which departments can bring forward
into their future planning.

Glance@Grammar – EGS End Of Term Newsletter

23rd July 2021Mrs S Field
EGS would like to wish everyone; all our staff, students, parents/carers carers and our local community a very happy, healthy and well-deserved Summer break.
We look forward to welcoming all our boys back in September.
After yet another challenging year, students were said farewell to and staff got together on the lawn at Lower for lunch and speeches. We said goodbye to some EGS Legends and fabulous staff who are moving on; amongst those were Mr Alder, Mr Kearney and Mrs Eden (who has been with us for 40 years and seen 7 headmasters pass through!).

#FavouriteBookFriday…with Mr Pieri

23rd July 2021Mrs S Field
#FavouriteBookFriday: finishing this school year with Assistant Head, Mr Pieri who has chosen ‘Doctor Socrates: Footballer, Philosopher, Legend by Andrew Downie’.

A brilliant book telling the extraordinary story of a talented footballer who wanted a simple life but through the power of his morals led one that was anything but. My first memories of Socrates were of a teammate of my favourite player of the fabled 1982 Brazil team, Zico, and while I was enchanted by Zico’s skills I could not ignore the gangly, long haired star and of course that goal v Russia. The chapters about the 1982 World Cup team before, during and after are great and allowed more than a few moments to reminisce the first time I shed a tear over football (I was 8 btw!) As a book there is plenty to enjoy – so many stories and quotes. A fantastic read that gives you an insight into Brazilian club football and Socrates’ role in instilling democracy to football in an era when this was alien to the Brazilian people.

“For the first time in Brazil’s history, a sportsman had a megaphone and fans were listening,”

Who Won the Staff V Students Golf Match?

22nd July 2021Mrs S Field
Last week saw our annual staff v student golf match at Bush Hill Park which has been running since 2016.
It was a very close match ending as a DRAW with 32 points each… which is not too bad for the staff team as they have yet to win a tournament!
But, more importantly everyone had a great time in the sun!

⚽ 5 Games. 5 Finals. 5 Wins. 5 Borough Cups!🏆
🔥 EGS on fire!

Our Y10 football team made it four Borough Cup wins for the school last week with an incredible come‑from‑behind 4–1 victory!
And they didn’t have long to wait for company…
Yesterday, our Y7s delivered a brilliant performance of their own, winning their cup final 4–2!

That means 5 out of 5 Borough Cups this year — a clean sweep!

Huge congratulations to all the boys who represented the school so brilliantly, and a massive thank‑you to our Sports Department for their hard work and support – definitely a reflection of our school motto: As Much As I Can’!
