The Christmas Concert Rocked!

5th December 2022Mrs S Field
The Christmas concert was a huge success with all the Year Bands, Choir and many others performing brilliantly. Carols were sung and mulled wine was quaffed! 🎶🍷
As well as a wonderful night had by all, our FEGS bar was kept busy and whose takings will be invested back into supporting the students as well as HSBC matching everything made in our raffle, pound for pound.
All in all quite a night !
Thank you to everyone who came along to the evening and to our students for all their performances.

Book and Role Model #oftheweek

2nd December 2022Mrs S Field

Book of the week: High Rise Mystery by Sharna Jackson

“If you think that finding a body is a fun adventure, you’re 33% right.”

In the right place at the wrong time.

There’s been a murder in The Tri, and super-sleuths Nik and Norva are the detective duo the Block needs to solve it.

“ A rare freshness and energy” – The Sunday Times.

“The best detective duo I’ve read in along time” – Robin Stevens (author).

Role Model of the week: Ade Adepitan

Name: Adedoyin Olayiwola “Ade” Adepitan MBE (MBE awarded for hiscontribution to disability sport in 2012)

Born: Nigeria 17th March 1973 (moved to London when he was three.)

Employment: British television presenter and wheelchair basketball player, Author and Actor.

At fifteen months old Ade contracted Polio, which left him with limited movement in his legs. Taught to walk with iron callipers, when he was 12 years old, two physiotherapists introduced Ade to wheelchair basketball and he fell in love with the sport. Years later, Ade’s wheelchair basketball team took Bronze at the Athens 2004 Paralympics and Gold at the 2005 World Cup.

He was then given the chance to try out as a T.V Presenter for sport. He was successful and so other opportunities came his way.

He’s a patron of the charity Go Kids Go, a supporter of the NSPCC and WheelPower Charity, and an Athlete Ambassador for Right to Play (helping players with disabilities). He has supported Comic Relief, Rotary International, the Gates Foundation and the End Polio campaign.

Ade documents his story in his children’s books, Cyborg Cat- Rise of the Parsons Road Gang and Cyborg Cat and the Night Spider. All sale proceeds go to Children in Need.

Y12 Find Out About Using Maths In The Real World….

30th November 2022Mrs S Field

On Friday the 18th of November, 10 A level students travelled to central London to a Maths in Action conference.

The first lecture was Fighting Disease with Mathematics given by Sara Jabbari from the University of Birmingham.
Sara described the way mathematics can be used to understand antibiotic resistance, track the dynamics of bacterial infections and how mathematics helps in the development of new drugs to tackle disease.
The second lecture was Over-analysing Video games given by Matthew Scroggs from the University of Cambridge.
Matt applied some mathematical thinking to Pac-Man and other video games. He worked out the shortest possible route to complete a Pac-Man level and showed us his attempt –  which was pretty impressive. He also discovered the 2-, 3- and 4-dimensional shapes that video game characters live on.
The third lecture was Mathematical stories by Katie Steckles who is a Mathematician and Communicator.
Did you know that Pascal was not the first person to discover Pascal’s triangle?  There is evidence of other mathematicians who discovered this centuries before Pascal.  Pascal was the first to publish this, hence it was named after him.
The fourth lecture was How to get rich quick by Sophie Maclean who is a Mathematician and Communicator.
Being able to determine the future is a great way to get money. From fairground games to the stock market, knowing what will happen is a great advantage. But even if we don’t know for certain, statistics and probability can help us make valuable predictions. In this session, Sophie gave an introduction to the world of finance and shared some of the Maths she used working as a trader on the Amsterdam stock exchange.  Please note: she did not give any financial advice to the students!
The last lecture of the day was given by Nicole Cozens who is a Maths Educator about Staring into Space.
How big is the Earth? How far away is the furthest space craft? How many aliens are there? We looked at questions that people have asked about Space, and mathematical solutions (not all right!) that people have created.  Nicole also gave an informative guide to exam success earlier in the day.
It was an enjoyable day out and Year 12 started to see how mathematics is used in the real world.

To continue on with introducing those who support and help make a difference to our school, today’s spotlight is Mr Yilmaz, Parent Governor.
Mr Yilmaz currently sits on the Admissions sub-committee and Resources & Management sub-committee as well as being a link governor for our Modern Foreign Languages Department (MFL).

Catch-Up: Book & Role Model ‘of the week’

28th November 2022Mrs S Field
Mrs Rudolph, our Library Manager, has been running Book of the Week and Role Model of the Week in school recently.
Catching up, here are the books and role models she has recently focused on.
If any of the boys/parents can think of some we could highlight, please feel free to suggest some to her 🙂

W/C 7th November:

Book of the Week: The Recruit by Robert Muchamore

The first book in the Cherub Series.

Most suited for year 9 and up, this story is action packed.

Cherub agents are aged between ten and seventeen. They live in the real world, slipping under adult radar and getting information that sends criminals and terrorists to jail.

For official purposes, these children do not exist.

Constantly at the top of the most borrowed books in the school, I can say that this is THE most popular book series for our boys.

Role Model of the Week: Dynamo

Stage Name: Dynamo   Profession: Magician   Birth Name: Steven Frayne

Born: 17th December 1982 Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK, to a British mother and a father of Pakistani ancestry.   Height: 5ft 6”

Dynamo (Steven Frayne) was bullied at school because he came from a really poor housing estate and wasn’t very tall. He also has Crohn’s disease. His father was in prison for most of the time that he was growing up, so his grandfather taught him magic tricks as a means for self defense.

As he grew older, he took to the streets, talked his way into events and concerts, so that he could perform magic. Sometimes he would video the amazed reactions he received from people.

Since then, we have seen him on TV trapping peoples phones in glass bottles and walking on water! He has been inducted to the secretive inner folds of the Magic Circle and has raised money for charity.

W/C 14th November:

Book of the Week: The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

A BOLT OF LIGHTNING ON MY KICKS……….

THE COURT IS SIZZLING. MY SWEAT IS DRIZZLING.

STOP ALL THAT QUIVERING. CUZ TONIGHT I’M DELIVERING.

Josh and his twin Jordan have basketball in their blood. They’re kings of the court, star players for their school. But when Jordan meets a girl, the twins’ tight-knit bond is tested – are the rules of the game about to be broken?

Role Model of the Week: Joe Wicks

Name: Joseph Trevor Wicks MBE   AKA: The Body Coach

Born: 21st September 1985, Epsom, Surrey. His father worked as a roofer and his mother was a social worker. Joe grew up alongside his two brothers, Nick and George, on a council estate.   Height: 5ft 8”

Most people first heard of Joe Wicks when he became a massive hit on YouTube with his ‘P.E. with Joe’ workouts. His aim was to support children at home during the covid pandemic with their fitness – but he has done even more since then. How did he become so famous and successful? Here is a brief look at how he did it.

School: Blenheim High School followed by NESCOT technology college and then moving on to study sports science at St Mary’s University in Twickenham. This degree set the foundation for what would become a successful career in fitness.

Work: Joe first started as a teaching assistant in a school, but then left to set up his own business as a personal trainer and nutritional coach. He spent time advertising and giving out flyers to people about his classes. Then he began to put videos on YouTube and pictures on Instagram of both his fitness classes and healthy recipes. ‘P.E. with Joe’ on YouTube was an humongous hit during the covid pandemic and all his hard work began to pay off. Soon he was being offered book deals, TV shows and money for numerous product endorsements.

He was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to fitness and charity in the United Kingdom and abroad – and particularly for his aspirational support during the Covid 19 pandemic.

W/C 21st November:

Book of the Week: One Of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus

FIVE STUDENTS WALK INTO DETENTION – ONLY FOUR LEAVE ALIVE

Yale hopeful BRONWYN has never publicly broken a rule.

Sports star COOPER only knows what he’s doing in the baseball diamond.

Bad boy NATE is one misstep away from a life of crime.

Prom queen ADDY is holding together the cracks in her perfect life.

And outsider SIMON, creator of the notorious gossip app at Bayview High, won’t ever talk about any of them again.

He dies 24 hours before he could post their deepest secrets online. Investigators conclude it’s no accident.

All of them are suspects.

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far You’ll go to protect them.

Role Model of the Week: Malala Yousafzai

Born: 12 July 1997, Mingora, Pakistan

The Nobel Peace Prize 2014 Residence at the time of the award: United Kingdom

Prize motivation: “for her struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education”

Malala Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for the right of every child to receive an education.

She was born in the Swat Valley in Pakistan. When the Islamic Taliban movement took control of the valley in 2008, girls’ schools were burned down, and they banned girls from going to school. Malala spoke out publicly against the Taliban’s regime and in 2009 it was agreed that girls could go to school, as long as they wore Burkas.

It was not long before the Taliban threatened Malala’s life. In 2012, Malala was shot. She survived, but had to flee to England and live in exile.

Malala graduated at Oxford University in 2020 and has continued with her charity, the Malala fund, to support girls education around the world and her work with refugees.

⚽ 5 Games. 5 Finals. 5 Wins. 5 Borough Cups!🏆
🔥 EGS on fire!

Our Y10 football team made it four Borough Cup wins for the school last week with an incredible come‑from‑behind 4–1 victory!
And they didn’t have long to wait for company…
Yesterday, our Y7s delivered a brilliant performance of their own, winning their cup final 4–2!

That means 5 out of 5 Borough Cups this year — a clean sweep!

Huge congratulations to all the boys who represented the school so brilliantly, and a massive thank‑you to our Sports Department for their hard work and support – definitely a reflection of our school motto: As Much As I Can’!
