Jack Petchey Speak-Out Regional Finals / #StudentSpotlight: Michael Svoboda

12th May 2025Mrs S Field

The journey to the Enfield Regional Finals of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge with The Speakers Trust started with an intense, full-day workshop at Enfield Grammar School.

30 students participated, working hard to refine their public speaking skills. The workshop was packed with engaging sessions, expert coaching, and helpful feedback that prepared everyone to perform their best.

The students then moved on to the Assembly Finals, where six outstanding speakers were selected to represent the school. The finalists included:
Alex Aning-Bonsu, Aiden Goldring, Nikodem Kotwica, Daniel Obisesan, Burhan Mehdi and Michael Svoboda
These six students each delivered powerful and thought-provoking speeches, impressing both their peers and teachers with their confidence and eloquence.

Michael Svoboda had the honour of being the first speaker at the Enfield Regional Finals, held at St. Ignatius College in February 2025. Opening a regional event like this is always a challenge, but Michael handled it with poise and confidence. His speech, “Our Dreams are Waiting,” was delivered with passion and clarity, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in the room.

Michael’s parents, sibling, and teachers were present to cheer him on, and they couldn’t have been prouder of his performance. His hard work and dedication were evident, and they watched with immense pride as he stepped onto the regional stage. While Michael didn’t make it to the top spot, his participation in this prestigious event was a huge accomplishment. He represented Enfield Grammar School with pride and his performance was definitely a standout moment of the evening, a clear demonstration of his hard work and passion, marking the beginning of his journey as a public speaker.

EGS Lunchtime On VE Day

8th May 2025Mrs S Field

After a wonderfully informative and interesting assembly led by Mr Turner (the presentation was then left playing throughout the lunchtime), and a 2 minute silence, our catering team, led by Mrs Jarvis, put on a wonderful ‘wartime spread’ with their usual enthusiasm to celebrate any important occasion.  Kamsi, who is volunteering in the kitchen for his DofE award also got into the spirit and joined the team in their 1940s head scarves – what a great sport!

VE DAY – 80th Anniversary!

8th May 2025Mrs S Field
At EGS, we will be marking this significant moment in our nation’s history during form time and appropriate curriculum slots this week.
VE Day – Victory in Europe Day – on 8 May 1945, marked the end of the Second World War in Europe. It was a day of immense relief, celebration, and reflection across the UK and beyond. We will encourage our students to understand the profound sacrifices made, the human stories behind the headlines, and the enduring importance of peace and unity.
Resources we will be using are from the British Legion/ and the Imperial War Museum and we will also have material available in the Library for students to come along and look at.
This is a meaningful opportunity to help our students connect with a pivotal moment in our shared history, and to consider what remembrance and resilience mean to us today.

An Unforgettable School Trip to Baller League UK!

7th May 2025Mrs S Field

A few lucky students from our school had the incredible opportunity to visit Baller League UK at the Copper Box Arena—a well-earned reward for their outstanding attitude to learning this past term.

Baller League UK offers a unique fusion of football and technology, bringing fans closer to the action with interactive activities through QR codes. Our students were amazed by the fast-paced matches and the innovative twists that keep the league exciting.

With football legends like Ian Wright and John Terry managing the teams, the competition was intense. One of the standout moments was experiencing the Game Changer, a thrilling feature that can completely shift the outcome of a match in the final three minutes!

This trip not only gave our students a great view for the new era of football but also sparked curiosity about the technology behind it. Who knows? In the future, we might see some of our own students on the pitch or working behind the scenes on the cutting-edge tech that makes this league so special.

Want to see the action for yourself? Catch the next matches live on Twitch every Monday up until June

What is Baller league ?

An innovative six-a-side league blends the energy of traditional football with dynamic new rules designed to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Football icons like Gary Lineker, John Terry, and Luis Figo will take the reins as team managers, joined by YouTube stars Miniminter and Toni from Sidemen and more. Plus, the legendary Micah Richards, John Terry, Alan Shearer, Freddie Ljungberg, Jens Lehmann, Robert Pirès & more will step in as coaches.

Micah Olowu: Incredible Performance at Stuart Lawrence Tribute

4th May 2025Mrs S Field
On Friday 25 April, the Dugdale Centre in Enfield played host to a moving and powerful tribute to Stuart Lawrence, an event sponsored by Nexus and expertly organised by Nexus ambassador, Anna Vaughan. The evening brought together members of the community, civic leaders, educators, and young people to honour the profound impact of Stuart’s work and legacy, while also reflecting on the injustice endured by his brother, Stephen Lawrence.
A standout moment of the evening came from Enfield Grammar School student, Micah Olowu, who was specially invited to perform a spoken word piece, which was a well-deserved opportunity following his stunning performance at the same venue as part of the Write2Speak group. Once again, Micah captivated the audience with his eloquence, passion, and deep sense of justice. His piece paid tribute to Stuart’s inspiring activism while courageously expressing his personal disapproval of the tragic events surrounding Stephen Lawrence’s death.
Micah’s performance was nothing short of remarkable and quickly became the highlight of the evening. He was met with heartfelt applause and warm commendations from his peers, the Lawrence family, the Mayor of Enfield (Cllr Mohammad Islam), Leader of Enfield Borough Council (Cllr Ergin Erbil), several headteachers, teachers, parents, and other specially invited guests in attendance. His powerful words resonated with all present, affirming the importance of youth voice in continuing the fight for justice and equality.
Following his performance, Micah was briefly interviewed, where his passion for speech and justice for all shone through once more. He spoke about the months-long process of developing his spoken word piece, describing the emotional depth and reflection that went into every line. He also used the opportunity to express his appreciation for the diversity and inclusivity nurtured at Enfield Grammar School – values clearly reflected in the school’s culture and curriculum, which he credited as helping shape both his identity and his voice.
Among those visibly moved by the performance were Micah’s proud parents and his teacher, Ms. Senior, who accompanied him to the event. Their pride was shared by all in the room, as Micah’s contribution reinforced not only his talent, but also the enduring relevance of the Lawrence legacy in today’s society.
The afternoon stood as a beacon of remembrance, resilience, and hope – with Micah Olowu’s performance serving as a poignant reminder that the torch of justice continues to be carried by a new, powerful generation.

For the second consecutive year, we were honoured to partner with the Kusuma Trust and @speakers.trust to provide a few year 9 students with a rich, curriculum-enhancing cultural experience. Thanks to their generous sponsorship, students were given the opportunity to broaden their cultural capital and deepen their appreciation of both the curriculum and the wider world.

This year’s visit took place in May 2025, at the @iwmlondon Imperial War Museum - an inspiring and thought-provoking setting. The visit served not only as a cultural enrichment opportunity but also as a powerful vehicle for developing key oracy skills, including public speaking, active listening, deliberation, and constructive feedback. These skills are integral to our English curriculum, particularly in exploring the Power and Conflict context and the spoken language components of the course.

Throughout the day, students engaged in a focused inquiry into the role of art in wartime. Under the expert guidance of a museum facilitator, they were introduced to the subject through a stimulating briefing, before embarking on an interactive exploration of the museum’s collection. Working collaboratively, they identified and analysed significant artworks, capturing key insights using group iPads. The visit culminated in team presentations, where students articulated their learning and reflected on the pieces that resonated with them most.

It was a day of meaningful engagement, critical thinking, and expressive growth -- an unforgettable experience that truly exemplified the transformative power of education beyond the classroom.

Thank you to Miss Senior who organises so many of these enrichment programmes along with Miss Ishaq and Mr McKoy who supported on the day.

The Psychology and Sociology Year 12 students ventured into Westminster with Mrs Baldwin and Mr Harcourt this week to visit the Supreme Court; which is the highest court in the UK.

They were given a guided tour through the courts and learnt about the role of the Supreme Court and some of high profile cases that have been heard in this historical building.
They even got to sit in the gallery and listen to a live court case.

After lunch, the students then walked through Parliament Square, The Mall and gave the King a wave as they went past Buckingham Palace!

It was an interesting and enjoyable day for all and even the rain could not dampen their spirits!

Year 9 have been looking at and learning about Optical Art with Mr Chrysanthou, in particular studying artists; Bridget Riley (English painter known for her optical illusion art) Victor Vasarely (Hungarian-French painter known for being a leader of the Op Art movement)

Initially, designing some small examples to practise the technique, they are now creating their interpretations.

These are a few examples of the beginning stages of some of their artwork which is looking really good - can`t wait to see some of the finished pieces!
