EGS Alumni Football Club!

28th March 2025Mrs S Field

EGS Old Boys Football Club (EGS OB FC) is the official alumni football club for Enfield Grammar School, made up of former students from the age of 16 years, and growing every year. We play competitive football in the AFA League with four adult Saturday teams and a Vets side – all currently in the top four of their leagues.

This season’s been a big one:

  • 1st XI reached two cup finals and a semi-final. Watch this space!
  • 2s are in a final and made a quarter-final.
  • 3s, 4s, and Vets all made semi-finals.

We pride ourselves on the quality of football and the strong community vibe. Our close link with Enfield Town FC helps us stay connected to the local football scene, and we’re always looking to bring through fresh talent from EGS.

We also film our games using VEO, with highlights published on Instagram. One of our goals this season went viral, racking up 2.7 million views, 55k likes, and even getting featured on Dutch Match of the Day – where Marco van Basten and other World Cup legends had their say!

Watch it here:

If you’re a current or recent student who wants to keep playing at a high level, build lasting connections, and maybe even make your name online – reach out and get involved.

Starlight Express!

18th March 2025Mrs S Field
We took 10 of our fantastic EGS Music Scholars to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Starlight Express in Wembley last night. What a fantastic show! The boys had a brilliant time and were mesmerised by the spectacle of the show and very impressed by the music (and the roller skating of course!).

Visit to Abbey Road Institute

11th March 2025Mrs S Field

“Where The Music Magic Happens”……Yesterday saw the sixth form music tech boys and some GCSE music students head to the Abbey Road Institute, at Angel studios, Islington. This iconic studio was host to Adele’s 21, Rush’s Power Windows, as well as albums by Courtney Pine, Sam Smith, Robbie Williams and Fela Kuti. At this site, students can take an intensive one year course in music production.

The boys were thrilled to look around the live rooms and production suites and taste the musical history of quite a magical place.

Ezra Collective @EGS: Music and the important role of schools and youth clubs

5th March 2025Mrs S Field

From receiving their Best British Group award and performing at the Brits on Saturday, Femi, TJ and Joe, of Ezra Collective returned to school yesterday to film a clip for BBC Newsround that was aired this morning. They spoke with our music scholars, reminisced and generously donated some musical instruments to our music department.
It is truly wonderful to see how these young boys who came to us in year 7, having worked hard to followed their dream, and have flourished into talented, kind and generous men, living the life they aspired to. Is this not testament to all the passionate, caring teachers and youth club leaders in the world?!

You can also listen to Femi’s interview talking about the importance of youth clubs, schools and teachers that was also recorded at Enfield Grammar School yesterday on BBC Sounds for Radio 4 World At One. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0028jl1 (35.44 mins into the programme).

Ezra Collective Come Back to EGS Where It All Began……

A few weeks ago, we proudly welcomed back Femi and TJ Koleoso, members of the award winning Ezra Collective back to Enfield Grammar School where the Sunday Times photographed them in the room where their musical journey began.

The article came out this week; they talk about their childhood and the huge impact that Enfield Grammar School’s music department had by helping to guide them to where they are today. Our very own Mr. Escott deservedly gets named for his role in developing their talents and the significant contributions he made to them!

Femi:

Before secondary school, I didn’t really understand music outside a church context — things like the Brits and Glastonbury. In 2023 Ezra were the first jazz band to win the Mercury prize, and now we’re nominated for four Brits. When accolades like that come, I’m so grateful and think, thank you, Mr Escott. Thank you to all those youth clubs. All those teachers. Thank you, God. And my parents, who are always cheering us on.

Read the full article here: www.thetimes.com/culture/music/article/ezra-collective-i-love-playing-in-a-band-with-my-brother

This is following on from their amazing performance at Glastonbury 2023 where they wowed the crowds and created a massive buzz within the music world.

To our delight, Femi and TJ  came back to school on Tuesday to film a piece for the Brit Awards 2025 where they have been nominated for 4 prizes and will, of course, be performing. The boys again enthused about how important EGS was to their growth.

The Brits are on THIS Saturday (1 March) at 8pm on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player – please do watch and give a cheer to our Alumni brothers and their band, Ezra Collective, an incredibly talented jazz band of this modern world.

Ezra Collective will also be performing at the Radio 6 Music Festival, March 27 www.bbc.co.uk/backstage/6musicfestival/whos-performing-2025

We’re so proud of their accomplishments; it has been an absolute pleasure and honour to have them come back to us!

Our Winter WOW Day

8th January 2025Mrs S Field

We held our ‘Windows on Our World’ experience day just before we broke up for the Christmas holiday. These WOW days are a regular event in our yearly calendar and are part of our mission to enrich our curriculum and provide students with cultural literacy. They cover a very diverse set of trips and experiences, all of which will be rotated throughout the year groups each term.

Year 7: Power Up computing trip to the Science Museum, London Zoo, the Local Urban Trail

Year 8: Legoland, the National Gallery, Charity gift boxes

Year 9: Wealth & Distribution Trading Game, London Dungeons, Police Activity Day

Year 10: Activity Day

Year 12: London Treasure Hunt

Here are summaries of a few of the activities that took place:

Year 7 WOW Day Trip to the Science Museum Trip: was a positive trip for many students exploring key areas such as the Energy Hall, Space Centre and Power Up exhibition. Several students were quite fascinated by the Steam engine and the amazing clocks on display. In the Power up section, students were exposed to the history of gaming from the early 70’s to present innovations.

Mr N Applewhaite & Ms A Nachwa

Year 8 WOW Day Trip to the National Gallery: Year 8 had a wonderful day exploring The National Gallery with its stunning, priceless paintings. The students were captivated by the incredible artwork, asking thoughtful questions and showing genuine interest in the stories behind each masterpiece. They were especially fascinated with the Henri Rousseau painting “Tiger in a Tropical Storm” which they had studied in Year 7. Students sketched from the artworks that inspired them the most and made notes about their thoughts and feelings throughout the gallery.

Before heading home, we enjoyed the festive cheer of the Christmas markets at Trafalgar Square, with the twinkling lights and charming stalls adding to the excitement. It was a fantastic day of learning, creativity and wonder with a touch of Christmas magic.

Well done to Year 8 for their enthusiasm and curiosity throughout!

Thank you to all the teaching staff that took part on this trip and made it so fulfilling for the students.

The students had a fabulous time visiting the National Gallery and wonderful weather to explore Trafalgar Square and the Christmas Market.

Ms M Wertheimer & Ms Akaydin

Year 8 WOW Day Trip to Legoland: 8S and 8R had an unforgettable day at Legoland Windsor, braving the slightly chilly weather to enjoy a host of thrilling rides and attractions. Among the highlights were the breath-taking Flight of the Skylion, where they soared through mythical landscapes, and the swashbuckling Jolly Rocker, which had everyone laughing and cheering as it swung high above the crowds.

Even a delay on the M25 during the journey home couldn’t dampen their enthusiasm, as the group shared stories, laughter, and memories from their exciting adventure. It was truly a day filled with fun, excitement, and lasting smiles for everyone involved!

Ms L Paraskeva

Y9 WOW Day Trip to the London Dungeons: 9F and 9M had an exciting and, at times, spinechilling time finding out about the more gruesome aspects of London’s dark history. We gagged at the repulsive smells of London of yore, interacted with a cast of monstrous characters, and screamed until we were hoarse!

Ms J Mcall

Year 12 WOW Day London Treasure Hunt: The year 12s had a great WOW Day exploring the cultural sites of our capital city.  They completed a ‘Selfie Treasure Hunt’ taking in landmarks from the financial square mile in the East of the City, along the River Thames and then up into Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden.

Ms K Johnson

Year 9 WOW Day: Police Engagement and Heritage:

Year 9 students at Enfield Grammar School recently experienced a WOW (Windows on the World) Day, combining local history and police engagement sessions. The day was designed to inspire curiosity and link learning to real-world opportunities while embracing the school’s PRIDE values.

The morning sessions kicked off with an engaging overview of the history of policing in London. Students explored the evolution from Charles II’s “Charleys” and the Bow Street Runners to the establishment of the Metropolitan Police by Sir Robert Peel. Interactive discussions highlighted the challenges early officers faced and the ongoing importance of public trust.

In the workshops, students interacted with specialists from the Mounted Police, Dog Unit, Firearms Team, and Community Engagement Team. They learned about the training, challenges, and responsibilities of each role, bringing the police’s work to life. Hands-on sessions encouraged students to ask questions and reflect on careers in public service.

The day concluded with an exploration of Enfield Grammar’s heritage, featuring artefacts and stories about its 400+ year history. From its role as a church school to its wartime contributions, students connected their present learning to the rich legacy of their school and community. It was an inspiring day full of discovery, reflection, and engagement.

Mr M Collins

Back in March, Year 7 students participated in the @write2speakuk initiative and the impact was truly inspiring. The sessions provided a platform for students to explore their voices, express themselves with confidence, and engage in meaningful discussions—all guided by outstanding facilitators.

The expertise and enthusiasm of the facilitators were central to the programme’s success. Their ability to connect with students, encourage participation, and nurture creativity ensured that even the most reserved students felt empowered to share their thoughts.

The emotional impact of the initiative was clear. Students not only developed their writing and speaking skills but also grew in confidence. Many took pride in their work, stepping outside their comfort zones to express themselves in ways they hadn’t before. The energy in the room was electric as ideas took shape and came to life.

Write2Speak has left a lasting impression, equipping students with valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom. It was an enriching, transformative experience—one that will continue to resonate with them in the future.

The Art Department took their Year 11 GCSE students to visit the Tate Modern, London and walk along the Southbank.

The trip gave students the opportunity to experience the Turbine Hall and view artwork in this vast industrial setting. World famous art by artists such as Picasso, Leger, Braque, Matisse was exhibited alongside new contemporary artworks Outi Pieski, Arahmaiani and Farah Al Qasimi.

From Waterloo station, we ambled along the Southbank, taking photographs of the architecture and landmarks. The skyline showcasing the London Eye, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, the Shard and Cutty Sark at Greenwich. On the walk back to Liverpool Street station, we visited the bombed out ruins of the Church of St. Dunstan in the East. We stopped for a moment to appreciate the glory of nature entwined around the gothic archways, walls and windows of the historic church.

The day was full of wonder. Imagination and thought provoking questions were raised. The Tate Modern and the buzz of the Southbank providing plentiful inspiration for the students Art GCSE Externally Set Assignment.

We look forward to seeing the students using the inspiration of the trip to develop their ideas and create new, exciting and innovative artwork.

Malakai is a true sportsman having already been featured in our #StudentSpotlight feature for his swimming achievements with Enfield Swim Squad.
We wish him continued success and enjoyment in the sport of rugby!

The journey to the Enfield Regional Finals of the @jackpetcheyfoundation and @speakers.trust `Speak-Out Challenge` started with an intense, full-day workshop at Enfield Grammar School.

30 students participated, working hard to refine their public speaking skills. The workshop was packed with engaging sessions, expert coaching, and helpful feedback that prepared everyone to perform their best.

The students then moved on to the Assembly Finals, where six outstanding speakers were selected to represent the school. The finalists included:
Alex Aning-Bonsu, Aiden Goldring, Nikodem Kotwica, Daniel Obisesan, Burhan Mehdi and Michael Svoboda
These six students each delivered powerful and thought-provoking speeches, impressing both their peers and teachers with their confidence and eloquence.

Michael Svoboda had the honour of being the first speaker at the Enfield Regional Finals, held at @officialstignatiuscollege in February 2025. Opening a regional event like this is always a challenge, but Michael handled it with poise and confidence. His speech, "Our Dreams are Waiting" was delivered with passion and clarity, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in the room.

Michael`s parents, sibling, and teachers were present to cheer him on, and they couldn’t have been prouder of his performance. His hard work and dedication were evident, and they watched with immense pride as he stepped onto the regional stage.

While Michael didn’t make it to the top spot, his participation in this prestigious event was a huge accomplishment. He represented Enfield Grammar School with pride and his performance was definitely a standout moment of the evening, a clear demonstration of his hard work and passion, marking the beginning of his journey as a public speaker.
