A10 SkatePark Rejuvenated by Shay Press & EGS Students!

Former EGS student and local artist, Shay Press, collaborated with our Year 8 and Year 9 Art students last week, at the A10 Skate Park, Edmonton.

Commissioned by the Enfield Council Art Team, the pupils had the opportunity to gain Knowledge and experience in producing a creative, vibrant, graffiti style community mural.

They had the task of rejuvenating the skatepark from being described as dull and grey and they successfully injected (or sprayed in this case!) some colour and life into the area. Even Mr Purrier couldn’t resist picking up a spray can!

Well done to all our students who took part, they really seemed to have enjoyed the day, and a big thank you to Shay Press for his time and guidance 🙂

 

 

#StudentSpotlight : Mir H Al-Haque Year 12

Mir is currently studying A-level Computer Science, Information Technology, and Media and has chosen to follow a career pathway into cyber-security.

Out of school, Mir is a corporal in our local RAF Air-Cadets; 85 Squadron in Middlesex Wing which he joined 5 years ago. This is not an extra-curricular activity to be taken lightly but one that encourages and expects loyalty, determination and effort which results in being very rewarding, as Mir has experienced.

Being an air-cadet, he has learnt new skills from first-aid to parade drills, from camping to flying and has also earned him a couple of extra B-techs along the way.

The opportunities and experiences Mir has had with the air-cadets is priceless and as well as being thoroughly enjoyable, has given him extra skills and future pathways to follow.

EGS Gets Growing Again!

This week saw our Gardening Club start up again and there was definitely plenty to do!

Apart from the many weeds that we need to tame, there were also some interesting discoveries amongst our overgrown patch, purple carrots, mustard plants, wild sweet peas, wild clover, garlic chives and lots of herbs….a few of us couldn’t resist a bit of tasting! ☘️🌻🌿🌺🌾🥬

Alex in Y8 took home some mint, and then sent in a photo of the mint tea he made for himself that evening! ☕

Everyone got stuck in and managed to start filling up our compost bins. Next week we shall continue, and hopefully start seeding a variety of flowers, herbs and vegetables, whilst learning about the value of soil, organic gardening, growing for food and the effects on our planet. 🌍

The next job to tackle is the renovation of the existing planters or construction of new ones (they are happily rotting away) – do let us know if you know of anyone who can help us with that!

It was wonderful to watch the boys and reminded us all about the health and wellbeing effects of gardening as well.💚

#StudentSpotlight: Ethan Bousoula – Jack Petchey ‘Speak-Out’ Winner

Regional Champion: Ethan Bousoula – Congratulations!
In February, the Enfield Regional Final 2022-23 of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge was hosted.
634 students had previously attended the Jack Petchey workshops and from them, Ethan was selected to go forward into the final.
The regional final evening was packed with original and insightful ideas from many young speakers, but it was our very own Ethan who stood out and won the judges over with his speech called “It Doesn’t Get Better (YOU get better)”. 
Ethan’s speech was an emotional account of his experience of being gay and coming out at EGS. His speech was honest, vulnerable and incredibly powerful and I am very confident that out of the 37 Regional Finalists, he will be chosen as one of the 15 to perform at The Cambridge Theatre on the West End and go for gold!
If you see Ethan, please do congratulate him – he deserves it.
Ms Ireland says “It was a win for him, EGS, our community and the LGBTQ+ community. One very proud teacher right here!”

Year 11 & 13 Insight Week Opportunity at Lloyds

The programme will run from Tuesday 25th July – Friday 28th July 2023.

Aimed at GCSE and A-Level students, you will experience the working environment of two global businesses throughout a week of workshops, networking and gain an insight into career opportunities within Lloyd’s and Aon.

Please note the Insight Week will take place in London and the attendance is mandatory for the 4 days. You must be able to travel into London as we are not providing accommodation expenses.

Reach Employability Day

The Employability Day was an innovative event at the School and it was organised by Reach Society at the invitation of the head teacher, Mr Chris Lamb, who wanted to provide all pupils with the opportunity to develop their awareness of future pathways beyond school; and to inspire them to get into the habit of exploring and making discoveries which they can then use to make a success of their lives.

It was a busy day with a real buzz in the air; lots of motivational talks and information giving – we hope the students enjoyed it as much as all our guests.

Stephen Lawrence Day 2023

Marking 30 years since the tragic loss of Stephen Lawrence, 2023 shares the theme of ‘ordinary can be extraordinary’ and asking all to “pledge an action to positively impact the lives of young people from marginalised backgrounds, together we can honour Stephen’s life and legacy, and build a fairer, kinder and more equitable society in his name”.
