Progress 8 and Attainment 8 are two key measures used to evaluate a school’s performance.
While traditional metrics such as the percentage of grades 7–9 at GCSE still have value, Progress 8 and Attainment 8 aim to provide a more rounded picture. They encourage schools to focus on improving outcomes for all pupils, not just those aiming for the highest grades.
Attainment 8 measures a student’s average achievement across eight approved subjects at Key Stage 4, including GCSEs or equivalent qualifications, and is used to compare overall school performance. The measure is calculated by totalling points from these subjects, with English and mathematics double-weighted, to indicate the average level of attainment.
Unlike Progress 8, Attainment 8 reflects a school’s overall academic outcomes rather than the progress pupils make from their starting points.
