All about the Y12 Maths Fest with Mrs Paraskeva

3rd March 2022Mrs S Field

On Friday 25th of February, 16 year 12’s and myself went to the Royal Institution in London for Maths Fest.  A great day was had by all in a beautiful building. The speakers were engaging and the topics they covered interesting.

We learnt how statistics is used to verify whether a new drug is effective, how data can be misleading and that you must look at the bigger picture and how WIFI and phone signals work so we can all use our mobile phones at the same time without the signals being blocked by someone else’s device.

We also learnt about the lesser known Lorenzo machine the top Nazi generals used in WW2 to communicate between each other which was cracked by a team effort of a linguist, mathematician and engineer.  This machine was reversed engineered.

In the afternoon we learnt about cake envy – how do you cut a cake so no one is envious about the slice of cake someone else receives.  Seems like a trivial problem until it is put into the real life context of international relations.

We also learnt how Pythagoras worked on music chords which culminated with speaker and mathematician Ben Sparks singing to us with his twin brother on the screen.

Here is what some of our students thought of the day:

A very fun and educational trip to the magnificent royal institute, and I found out that maths is involved in many different aspects of life

Life changing experience

It was interesting seeing how the mathematics of sharing a chocolate cake could relate to the broader topic of international relations

Gardening Club Receives Grant & Is Up and Running Again :-)

25th February 2022Mrs S Field

Our Gardening Club is back up and running again this year with some enthusiastic students from nearly all year groups. It was wonderful to see so many turn up 🙂

This week we started off by putting the compost bin together, pruning a few plants, planting & watering broad beans, weeding and turning over soil near shed, re-planting lavender & rosemary – Good Job!

We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Finnis Scott Foundation, who generously awarded us a grant of £500 which enabled us to purchase a little shed, greenhouse, soil, seeds, tools, compost bin and a water butt. – these items have made a great difference!

Our focus is on sustainable gardening, growing herbs for our Food Tech department, creating a meadow to attract insects and pollinators and growing various other flowers and vegetables which we hope to sell in Enfield Market in July!

This enterprise is very rewarding and enriching for our students and also offers support for our DofE Award students who can opt to volunteer as a helper or join in to learn a new skill.

More info about the grants available for horticulture and plant science:

⚽ 5 Games. 5 Finals. 5 Wins. 5 Borough Cups!🏆
🔥 EGS on fire!

Our Y10 football team made it four Borough Cup wins for the school last week with an incredible come‑from‑behind 4–1 victory!
And they didn’t have long to wait for company…
Yesterday, our Y7s delivered a brilliant performance of their own, winning their cup final 4–2!

That means 5 out of 5 Borough Cups this year — a clean sweep!

Huge congratulations to all the boys who represented the school so brilliantly, and a massive thank‑you to our Sports Department for their hard work and support – definitely a reflection of our school motto: As Much As I Can’!
