Years 12 & 13 Perform Bacterial Transformation!

22nd October 2025Mrs S Field

Year 12 and 13 A Level Biology and BTEC Applied Science students took part in a unique opportunity to carry out research-level experiments.

Thanks to AMGEN and the University of Hertfordshire, they performed bacterial transformation using a red fluorescent protein gene from sea anemones. Over two weeks, they cut the gene, created recombinant plasmids, and inserted the gene into E. coli bacteria. The bacteria that absorbed the gene turned red and glowed under UV light (see ‘labelled result’ in folder).

Students also used gel electrophoresis (see ‘gel electrophoresis result’) and even got to see and use a PCR machine—which costs at least £15,000!

They learned valuable lab skills including micro pipetting, aseptic technique, DNA manipulation, bacterial transformation, gel electrophoresis, and PCR. These are key skills for any future in STEM.

It was challenging, but they did exceptionally well learning and applying so many new techniques.

Another Musical Alumni Visit!! Jack Allen

20th October 2025Mrs S Field

We were delighted that ex-student, Jack Allen, popped into the music block last week.

Jack, who is now a successful music producer for Spotify, did A-level Music Technology with Mr Escott in 2018 and wanted to give a little back.

Jack has generously donated a new bass guitar, electric and acoustic guitars as well as some leads and some software for the computers in the tech suite. Thank you SO much!

He remembers his time at Grammar very fondly and wishes the department and school well for the future. It makes us so proud to see our wonderful ex-students successfully navigating the world today – this is why we do the job we do!

We believe that having passion creates a rounded character. In learning, sports, music, the arts and beyond, we encourage our students to pursue their interests with enthusiasm and a genuine love for what they do.
We also believe that boys who compete become men who have a strong sense of ambition. Our sporting success and range of sporting facilities are second to none across North London. EGS Alumni regularly represent local, national, and international teams in a variety of sports including Rugby, Cricket, Football and Athletics. We believe that academic excellence and sporting success can go hand in hand and we work hard to develop personalised learning pathways so that our elite sportsmen can be successful both on and off the field.
If you have a musical or sporting Year 6 son, you can apply for a Music or Sports Scholarship place to secure a September 2026 start. Details for these supplementary applications can be found on our Admissions & Scholarships website page: https://www.enfieldgrammar.org/…/admissions-scholarships/

Black History Month ‘Cultural Celebration Event’

30th September 2025Mrs S Field

We are delighted to inform you that Enfield Grammar School will be hosting a Black History Month Cultural Event on Friday 17 October 2025 from 5pm – 9pm in the Main Hall at Upper School.

This will be a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the rich culture, history, and contributions of African and Caribbean heritage.

The evening will feature live music from our talented student bands (Steel Pan band, Cinematic Ensemble and Groove Band), artistic stalls, a fully licensed bar run by our Friends of Enfield Grammar and delicious food on sale.

Tickets will be available on ParentPay from today, priced at £6 per adult and £3 per child, which includes your first Rum Punch (over 18’s only) or soft drink.

To make the occasion even more special, we warmly invite parents and carers to take part by running stalls. If you create or sell Afro-Caribbean crafts, clothing, or cultural items, this is a fantastic opportunity to share your work with our school community.

In addition, we will be holding a raffle on the night to raise funds in support of our newly established enrichment programme and our music department. We kindly ask for donations of raffle prizes—these could include gift vouchers, hampers, books, or other suitable items. Any contribution, large or small, would be greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in running a stall or donating a raffle prize, please email [email protected] for the attention of Mrs Roberts and Mrs Green.

We very much look forward to celebrating Black History Month together and hope you will join us in making this event a vibrant and memorable occasion for our students, families, and wider community.

⚽ 5 Games. 5 Finals. 5 Wins. 5 Borough Cups!🏆
🔥 EGS on fire!

Our Y10 football team made it four Borough Cup wins for the school last week with an incredible come‑from‑behind 4–1 victory!
And they didn’t have long to wait for company…
Yesterday, our Y7s delivered a brilliant performance of their own, winning their cup final 4–2!

That means 5 out of 5 Borough Cups this year — a clean sweep!

Huge congratulations to all the boys who represented the school so brilliantly, and a massive thank‑you to our Sports Department for their hard work and support – definitely a reflection of our school motto: As Much As I Can’!
