– all our STAFF all their work yesterday in putting together and hosting a fantastic Open-Evening.
– all our STUDENT volunteers helping out as tour guides, meet & greet, helping in departments.
– all the lovely FAMILIES who visited us; it was lovely to see you all and thank you for the wonderful feedback we received last night and today.
 
There was such a lot to see and get involved in; science experiments, music performances, murder mystery, tasting and branding, DT creations and even toasted marshmallows from our DofE boys.

Staff Spotlight: Ms N Baldwin, Head of Psychology

We start this week off by introducing our new Head of Psychology, Ms Baldwin.

Originally from Mauritius, Mrs Baldwin moved to England aged 8 and spent most of her school years in North London, she then went on to study a Psychology degree at university, followed by teacher training at Brighton University.
 
After graduating she started her career teaching GCSE social sciences and A-level Psychology. Throughout her career so far, she has had a number of varied roles, from classroom teacher, head of faculty and assistant headteacher.
 
She enjoys travelling and spending time with her family. She has a son aged 4 and a daughter aged 2!
 
Having spent most of her life living and teaching in London, she is so pleased to join the Enfield Grammar community teaching in the town that she grew up in and helping contribute to our boys exciting future ahead.

Staff Spotlight: Mr Escott, Teacher of Music

Malcolm Escott is our Music Technology Teacher, Guitar Teacher and oversees some of our school bands.

Malcolm has over thirty years of diverse performing, arranging and composition experience having been classically trained from a young age at Newcastle Cathedral before moving to London where he graduated from Middlesex University with a degree in Performing Arts.

In his career, Malcolm has won Guinness Battle of the Bands, recorded in New York, made several TV appearances and toured extensively through the U.K. and Europe as well as having been a member of a range of bands (soul, swing, rock) and had tracks commercially published.

Throughout this time, Malcolm also taught and mentored hundreds of young people at Enfield Grammar School and also at the North London Performing Arts Centre.

He was also a Music Technology examiner for Edexcel for four years before setting up the course at Enfield Grammar with Mr Leverno in 2015.

He then took a role as lead content provider for MusicTechStudent.com, but has now returned to teach the course once more at EGS.

Malcolm is currently a guitarist with London-based band Bazooka Joe, is routinely publishing new arrangements and compositions, is the main writer and performer with electric outfit Tartouf and is composing the soundtrack to a video game.

Sixth Formers Take On The Annual Maths Challenge!

Our senior mathematicians in Years 12 & 13 took on the annual Maths Challenge yesterday.

This Maths challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

The ‘problems’ our seniors face are designed to make students think; most are accessible, yet still a challenge for those with more experience.

We love to encourage our EGS mathematicians to push themselves and they always do us proud; Mrs Paraskeva (Head of Mathematics) can’t wait to see all the results!

Staff Spotlight: Mr C Lamb, Headteacher

I would describe myself as a “working class lad from t north” driven by my childhood experiences at school.

I attended a “rough comp” where standards were pretty low with regards to pushing students to get better grades and I then studied for my A levels at a selective Grammar school (and was laughed at by some of the staff for being a “bit thick”).

Both experiences ignited a passion to make comprehensive education in this country better so that ALL children could have a superb education and be taught by teachers that cared for their students.

As a country we are still so far away from this. As a school I know that staff at EGS get up in the morning to try and help in this endeavour.

“The devil wins when good people do nothing”, so at EGS we welcome good people to our staff and try to make good young men from the year 7 boys that walk through our doors year on year.

 

Yom Kippur 4th-5th October 2022

Yom Kippur, also known as Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year for the Jews.

It’s central themes are atonement and repentance.

Jews traditionally observe this holy day with a 25-26 hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services. Orthodox Jews will not use lotions, oils or creams or wear leather footwear.

Yom Kippur completes the annual period known in Judaism as the High Holy Days (or sometimes “the Days of Awe”) and takes place just over a week after the Jewish New Year, the festival is commemorated with a day-long fast.

After the fasting and towards the end of Yom Kippur they have a festive meal with family and friends.

Staff Spotlight: Library Manager, Mrs Rudolph

Please meet Mrs Rudolph, our Library Manager.
We asked her 3 questions;
 
1. How did you become the Enfield Grammar School’s Library Manager?
I started my Career in Banking and left when I started a family. I wanted a job which fit in with the school run and applied for a part time job at Enfield Grammar School in Reprographics (photocopying). The role also required that I supervised the library when the librarian took a lunch break and also to support her in the library when the pupils had lunch. I particularly enjoyed the library and began to learn and take on more responsibility.
The extra effort to learn and give a bit extra, helped me to be in a good position to apply for Library Manager when our Librarian retired. The rest is history!
 
2. What do you enjoy the most about your job?
Making a difference. Watching boys develop an enjoyment of a book we are reading and making progress with their reading. I enjoy providing a safe space of calm and quiet, having fun lessons, running events and organising/ meeting authors and illustrators. I am really looking forward to our second Poetry Slam taking place in the first week of October!
 
3. What inspires you?
The boys themselves. Our school motto is ‘As Much As I Can’. Having worked outside of education, I understand how important it is for pupils to be confident in expressing themselves and communicate well. Having the opportunities to practice reading, writing and public speaking, gives them good skills for life.
The boy’s sense of humour also keeps me going!

Staff Spotlight: Ms J McCall – Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum & Learning)

Enfield Grammar School would like to introduce:
Jenny McCall – our new Deputy Headteacher – Curriculum & Learning.
 
Jenny McCall is delighted to have joined our community as the new Deputy Head for Curriculum. She has worked in comprehensive boys’ education for 20 years and has previously led on curriculum, digital strategy, learning and teaching and professional development.
 
Hailing originally from the Isle of Wight, Ms. McCall grew up in Birmingham and after obtaining a degree in English from Leeds University, made the move to London to train to teach at the Institute of Education. She enjoys reading, quizzes, art exhibitions and cryptic crosswords. Her husband is also a Senior Leader in a Secondary School and they have two young children aged 4 and 6.
 
Ms McCall is very proud to be joining such a wonderfully diverse community with an incredible history and is excited to contribute to Enfield Grammar’s bright future.
 
And we are lucky to have her onboard!
