Happy Friday and we start today off with another #staffspotlight.
Today we’d like you to meet Ms Ria Ladas, SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).
 
What did you do before coming to Enfield Grammar?
‘Having completed a Biological Sciences degree with a specialism in Cancer Research, I decided to hang up my lab coat and pursue a career in Teaching. It has now been 4 years since I joined the school’.
 
What does your role in school consist of?
‘I started as a Science teacher and two years ago also took on the role of SENCo. I still teach science part-time specialising in Biology.
My main role as SENCo involves working with pupils and families across the school to get the best outcomes no matter their need or situation.
In addition to this, I am also the Designated Teacher for Looked after Children and EAL students.’
 
‘No two days at EGS are the same and I am fortunate enough to be supported in this role with the most amazing team of HLTAs (Higher-Level Teaching Assistants) and TAs who support our students across the school.’
 
What do you outside of work?
‘When I’m not working I love travelling, walking my dog and watching Arsenal games.’
 
Have you got a memorable moment/s or a highlight of your time here so far?
‘There are a few but am delighted to have been successful recently in winning a £5000 bid to develop a SEN inclusive learning hub for our boys to access. And, a lovely memory I have is of watching my class nurture and release a pigeon that flew injured in to to the classroom in the middle of a practical lesson in SC1!’

The Sound of EGS Voices

Yesterday, Ms Thompson, our singing teacher led our first Singing Workshop.
It showcased the physical, mental and social benefits of singing and group singing in particular.
The boys split into two teams and learned a whole new song from scratch, with a number of different parts. They learned to listen to each other, sing in harmony and develop an awareness of breath control, as well as the sheer fun of belting out pop hits at the top of their lungs!

Sporting Success for Malakai & Alex in Year 9

Sporting Success!
We are delighted to announce that Malakai and Alex in Year 9 have successfully trialled for the London Irish Developing Player Programme (DPP).
The aim of the DPP is to “help players find the right direction to follow in the game, whether that is towards professional rugby or long-term club participation”.
Well done boys. We are very proud of you!

Looking back to October and #BHM2022, our school had some great projects running;
– Reading Relays (Liam by Benjamin Zephaniah & Dream to Win by Jessica Ennis-Hill,
– Poetry Recitals – ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou
– Author visit & workshop by Breis (inspirational talk, reading extracts from his book, explaining Hip Hop and interactive Rapping
– Portrait Competition (of a Black/Ethnic role model) – winners to be announced soon!
– Themed inset day
– Themed school lunches
– Diwali celebration throughout the school
– Guest Speakers
– Question Time Panel
– BH lessons throughout the curriculum
We hope all the students enjoyed and learned from it all.
A huge thank you to all the staff who organised and delivered it all.

Diwali Celebrated at EGS

Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, is over half-term, so, this week has seen EGS celebrating in advance.
We have had pupils at Lower school preparing Rangoli patterns and making paper lanterns, Diwali displays have gone up in Lower Reception and the Lower dining area, a display in the Upper School Library is on show to all and our Catering Team cooked up a delicious, themed lunch for the boys and staff to enjoy; samosas, curry, and naan bread. Thank you to Mrs Sathish for leading on this project 🏮
Happy Diwali to our Hindu, Sikh and Jain community.

Staff Spotlight: Mrs Hawkins, Senior Finance Officer

Today’s Staff Spotlight is: Mrs Hawkins, Senior Finance Officer
We asked her to tell us a bit about herself and what she does in her role:
1.How did you become a Finance Officer at Enfield Grammar?

A friend of mine showed me an advert for a Finance Assistant role at EGS, I applied, and the rest is history… I have now been here since 2004, that’s 18 years!

2.What do you do within your finance role?

Support Staff are integral to the smooth running of a school and my role within Finance with my colleague, Mrs Povey, is very varied, ensuring the day-to-day aspects of school finances run smoothly and efficiently; processing orders and invoices, paying suppliers, reconciling payroll, assisting Departments with their budgets and preparing month end reconciliations and reports for SLT and Governors.

In addition, I also assist the School Business Manager with budget issues and prepare reports for the Auditors.

I need to be super organised as it can be extremely busy!

3.What do like about your job?

From meetings with auditors to being involved in student Wellbeing sessions, no day is the same. Working in a school environment adds a different dimension to working in a ‘usual’ office – I love the variety of it!.Although it can be stressful at times, I have made many happy memories working here alongside my colleagues.

4.What do you like to do outside of school life?

Away from school, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, Formula One and horse racing.
