Yoto Carnegie Medal 2022

Congratulations to the Yoto Carnegie Medal 2022 winner – Katya Balen with her book October,October. Not only did Katya win the Yoto Carnegie Medal, but also the Shadowers award, which is a result of all participating schools voting for their favourite. This year’s books were really good and it was a very close contest between them all.
 
Our EGS Yoto Carnegie Shadowers have been reading the shortlisted titles and have voted for their own EGS winner:
1st – ‘When The Sky Falls’ by Phil Earl
2nd – ‘Punching The Air’ by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam
3rd ‘Cane Warriors’ by Alex Wheatle.
Mrs Rudolph says that they had good fun debating the books. Well done boys!

Unfortunately the game was a shade ‘one-sided’ but a very valuable experience, particularly for the younger boys. MCC batted first, and despite some good bowling at times they managed to set a large target. One or two poor shot choices and tight bowling from the MCC saw the school bowled out for a low score.

Miss Montfort’s Y8 Book Reading Challenge

Ms Montfort organised a Book Reading Challenge across the Year 8 Forms.
Every month, the students had to pick a new book to read on a given topic.
As a reward for taking part in the challenge, 8 students watched the movie adaptation of “Life of Pi” by Ang Lee which some of them read for their last challenge of the year: to read a book about friendship.
Thank you very much to the students who took part in it! And, as Dr Seuss says: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.

Student Spotlight: Y13 Stephen Nicolaides

After an intensive interview process (with over a 1000 applications), we are pleased to share that Stephen Nicolaides (Yr13) has been awarded a OneStop scholarship of £15000.
The scholarship includes a bursary to provide financial support whilst at university, plus access to a mentor to provide career guidance and support.
As part of the scholarship, Stephen will also gain valuable work experience through internships during university summer holidays in areas of the business relating to sustainability and technology. There is a strong possibility that these internships could lead to a graduate role.
Stephen commented “I am looking forward to carrying out the work experience as part of the scholarship, to put into practice some of the skills that I will learn whilst at university”.
As we watch another member of the EGS alumni secure an amazing opportunity, we wish Stephen well for the future.

Bastille Day

Last Thursday, 14th July, was Bastille Day. Ms Montfort organised a lovely French breakfast and a cultural lesson filled with games and competitions for Year 5 pupils from St Andrews Primary School – the morning activities were a great success!
A massive thank you to Ms Montfort and the Year 7 helpers as well as Mrs Parrott and her catering team!

Market Day!

Yesterday saw our garden club run their Market stall in Enfield Town, selling plants, vegetables, upcycled planters and biscuits (all their own produce). It was a wonderful day and the boys really enjoyed the experience as well as making approx £140 that they can use to help fund the garden club for next season.
A big thank you to all the members of the public who came to the stall as well as our supportive members of staff, school governors, Enfield Market, School Food Matters and our special visit from the Mayor of Enfield.

EGS Staff v Students Golf Tournament

Our annual Staff v Students Golf Tournament took place and in a hard-fought battle, the students deservedly regained the prestigious golf trophy.
Well done to Jack, Charlie, Harry, Luke, Richie and Sam who took part and the staff are now already practicing for next year!

Y12 Business Mentor Visit

Sam Harvey, a Business Mentor from SalesForce who had worked with some of our Year 12’s through The Diana Award Mentoring Scheme, was so impressed with the progress of the boys who participated that she wanted to give them a taste of the corporate world in the hope to inspire them further.
 
It was our pleasure to take up Sam’s offer of an invite to SalesForce Tower, which is a two minute walk from London’s Liverpool Street Station. Our young men had the opportunity to meet a number of professionals, hear inspirational stories and experience an amazing view across London!
 
The boys also delivered presentations of their own and were fantastic! Mrs Jean-Louis, our Careers Lead, reported how very proud she was of them all!

Garden Club Has A Chef MasterClass Session

School Food Matters came in to run a Chef MasterClass with our gardening club boys as part of their Know Your Onions initiative. The session was to show how easy it was to make something cheaply, quickly and simply out of basic ingredients (that could be grown at home) and by adding some particular herbs and spices, making it taste superb!

The boys really enjoyed the session and the food that was produced di not last very long – all plates scraped clean!
