It’s Easter! Find out about the holiday and it’s traditions…

1st April 2021Mrs S Field

One of the principal holidays, or feasts, of Christianity, Easter marks the Resurrection of Jesus three days after his death by crucifixion. For many Christian churches, Easter is the joyful end to the Lenten (Lent) season of fasting and penitence.

The earliest recorded observance of Easter comes from the 2nd century, though it is likely that even the earliest Christians commemorated the Resurrection, which is an integral tenet of the faith. In 325 the Council of Nicaea decreed that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox (March 21).

Easter, therefore, can fall on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

Eastern Orthodox churches use a slightly different calculation based on the Julian calendar. As a result, the Orthodox Easter celebration usually occurs later than that of Roman Catholics and Protestants.

Traditions

Easter has many traditions, some deriving from folk customs.

Eating Roast Lamb on Easter Sunday – The custom of the Easter lamb appropriates both the appellation used for Jesus in Scripture (“behold the lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world,” John 1:29) and the lamb’s role as a sacrificial animal. Since the 12th century the Lenten fast has ended on Easter with meals blessed for the occasion.

Easter Eggs – The use of painted and decorated Easter eggs was first recorded in the 13th century. The church prohibited the eating of eggs during Holy Week, but chickens continued to lay eggs during that week, and the notion of specially identifying those as “Holy Week” eggs brought about their decoration. The egg itself became a symbol of the Resurrection. Just as Jesus rose from the tomb, the egg symbolizes new life emerging from the eggshell.

Hot Cross Buns – Traditionally eaten on Good Friday. The bun marks the end of Lent and different parts of the hot cross bun have a certain meaning, including the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spices inside signifying the spices used to embalm him at his burial

The Easter Bunny / Rabbit – The custom of associating a rabbit or bunny with Easter arose in Protestant areas in Europe in the 17th century but did not become common until the 19th century. The Easter rabbit is said to lay the eggs as well as decorate and hide them. The animal that brings the Easter eggs vary in countries in Europe such as a fox and Switzerland has a Cuckoo!

National Autism Week

31st March 2021Mrs S Field

The form time activities this week are focusing on autism.

Throughout the week we have been reading extracts from the book “Can You See Me?” to further understand and raise awareness for autism. It is an amazing book by Libby Scott and Rebecca Westcott, written from the perspective of a girl with autism.

We also have a video to watch from the award winning ‘Educating Essex’ programme about a Year 10 autistic boy named Christopher and what it is like to be autistic in a mainstream school.

For more information: https://www.autism.org.uk/get-involved/raise-money/world-autism-awareness-week

Can You See Me?

Endearing, insightful and warmly uplifting, Can You See Me? is a story of autism, empathy and kindness that will touch readers of all ages.

Tally is eleven years old and she’s just like her friends. Well, sometimes she is. If she tries really hard to be. Because there’s something that makes Tally not the same as her friends. Something she can’t cover up, no matter how hard she tries: Tally is autistic.

Tally’s autism means there are things that bother her even though she wishes they didn’t. It means that some people misunderstand, her and feel frustrated by her. People think that because Tally’s autistic, she doesn’t realise what they’re thinking, but Tally sees and hears – and notices – all of it. And, honestly? That’s not the easiest thing to live with.

Happy Passover

27th March 2021Mrs S Field

Passover –  a Jewish religious is a religious holiday or festival noted by ceremonies each year, mostly by Jewish people.

It occurs the night of the paschal full moon after the 14th of Nisan, eve of the 15th, telling the story of the exodus, (when God used Moses to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, as told in the book of Exodus in the Bible) and remembering how the angel of death “passed over” the houses of the Israelites during the tenth plague on Egypt.

It is often celebrated with great pomp and ceremony, especially on the first night, when a special family meal called the seder is held. During the seder, foods of symbolic significance commemorating the Hebrews’ liberation are eaten, and prayers and traditional recitations are performed.

The dates this year are from 27th March to 4th April 2021.

Favourite Book Friday: Mr Kearney’s Choice….

26th March 2021Mrs S Field

‘Fascinating . . . If you have even the slightest interest in Orwell or in the development of our culture, you should not miss this engrossing, enlightening book.’ John Carey, Sunday Times

George Orwell’s 1984 has become a defining narrative of the modern world.
The Ministry of Truth charts the life of one of the most influential books of the twentieth century and a work that is ever more relevant in this tumultuous era of ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative facts’. Dorian Lynskey investigates the influences that came together in the writing of 1984 from Orwell’s experiences in the Spanish Civil War and in wartime London to his fascination with utopian and dystopian fiction. Lynskey explores the phenomenon the novel became when it was first published in 1949 and the changing ways in which it has been read over the decades since, revealing how history can inform fiction and how fiction can influence history.

We`re delighted to share that our Wellbeing Lead, Ms Culora, recently collected our Silver Award in recognition of the successful embedding of TIPs across Enfield Grammar School. 🏆

As a result of this achievement, Ms Culora was also invited to join a borough-wide panel to share examples of best practice with colleagues from other schools.

A huge congratulations to Ms Culora and a heartfelt thank you to all staff for their continued commitment and dedication. ❤️

🌟 As a school, we are proud to be part of the Enfield Trauma Informed Practice in Schools and Settings (E-TIPSS) programme, helping to create a school environment where every student feels safe, supported and ready to succeed.

By embedding trauma-informed practices across our school, we focus on building positive relationships, supporting emotional wellbeing and helping students develop the confidence and resilience they need to thrive.
